What is Public Interest Law?

While defining Public Interest Law can be very difficult, it generally refers to all the parts of law that impact the public's rights, wellbeing, health, living and working environment.

These matters tend to disproportionately impact marginalised and/or disadvantaged communities.

Here are some examples of the progress achievable through public interest work, and how the law can be harnessed to address inequalities in our legal system and society —Public Interest Law:

• Harnesses the law to advance human rights and social justice

• Examines the law and its effect on politics, media, globalisation, privatisation, and the environment

• Prioritises access to justice for underepresented or marginalised groups

• Challenges decision-makers over actions that are unlawful or unfair

• Identifies solutions in the current unequal system where change is needed

• Empowers individuals and communities to pursue their rights
